E-Safiri is an early-stage start-up that aims to drive Africa’s transition into sustainable transport by developing solar-powered and grid-connected charging stations for 2&3 wheelers. Our mission is to accelerate the adoption of sustainable transport by providing reliable, accessible, and adequate charging infrastructure for e-mobility in Africa. E-Safiri has recently secured funding for several charging projects working in collaboration with NGOs, universities and commercial partners and is growing its team and developing its products.

Position Summary

The Head of Technical Services will lead and oversee the physical and operational integrity of E-Safiri’s EV charging infrastructure. This role is responsible for installation, commissioning, maintenance, field service operations, hardware diagnostics and technical quality assurance of charging units across all sites. This role ensures that all charging stations are operational, safe, efficient and compliant with regulatory and engineering standards.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

1. Technical Operations Strategy & Execution

  • Develop and implement the technical operations strategy aligned with E-Safiri’s expansion goals.
  • Establish service delivery standards for installation, commissioning and maintenance of the charging hubs.
  • Drive operational excellence to ensure maximum charger uptime and reliability.
  • Develop preventive and corrective maintenance frameworks.
  • Define SLAs (Service Level Agreements) for site response times and resolution targets.

2. Installation & Commissioning Oversight

  • Lead site assessments, electrical evaluations and technical feasibility studies.
  • Oversee charger installations ensuring compliance with electrical and safety standards.
  • Supervise commissioning and testing of all new charging units before activation.
  • Ensure proper documentation of technical drawings, load calculations and site layouts.
  • Standardize installation procedures and technical checklists.

3. Maintenance, Diagnostics & Field Support

  • Oversee preventive and corrective maintenance programs.
  • Lead technical troubleshooting and diagnostics of faulty charging units.
  • Ensure rapid response to field incidents and technical emergencies.
  • Establish spare parts inventory management systems.
  • Analyze recurring faults and implement root cause solutions.

4. Field Team Leadership & Management

  • Build and manage a high-performing team of:
    • Field Engineers
    • Technicians
    • Technical Support Staff
  • Develop structured shift schedules and deployment plans.
  • Provide continuous technical training.
  • Conduct performance reviews for technical team members.
  • Foster a culture of safety, accountability and operational discipline.

5. Quality Assurance & Compliance

  • Ensure all installations comply with:
    • Kenya Energy regulations
    • Electrical safety standards
    • Environmental guidelines
  • Develop and enforce technical SOPs and operational manuals.
  • Conduct routine technical audits of sites.
  • Implement health and safety policies for field operations.
  • Ensure compliance with warranty and manufacturer guidelines.

6. Vendor & Contractor Management

  • Identify and manage relationships with hardware suppliers and installation contractors.
  • Evaluate vendor performance and technical compliance.
  • Negotiate technical service contracts and maintenance agreements.
  • Ensure quality assurance on third-party work.

7. Asset & Infrastructure Management

  • Maintain a comprehensive asset register of all charging infrastructure.
  • Monitor equipment lifecycle and replacement planning.
  • Optimize infrastructure utilization and performance.
  • Track technical KPIs including:
    • Charger uptime %
    • Mean Time to Repair (MTTR)
    • Fault recurrence rate
    • Installation turnaround time

8. Risk Management & Safety Oversight

  • Identify operational and technical risks across charging sites.
  • Develop site risk mitigation and emergency response procedures.
  • Investigate technical incidents and recommend corrective actions.
  • Ensure proper insurance documentation and risk compliance standards.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • Solar T2 certification required, T3 certification preferred.
  • 3–5 years experience in:
    • Energy systems, solar technologies, relevant software and hardware solutions.
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • Electrical systems and load management
    • Power distribution systems
    • Field operations management
  • Experience managing field technical teams.
  • Strong understanding of safety regulations and engineering compliance standards.
  • Strong understanding of the Kenyan power sector.
