E-Safiri is an early-stage start-up that aims to drive Africa’s transition into sustainable transport by developing solar-powered and grid-connected charging stations for 2&3 wheelers. Our mission is to accelerate the adoption of sustainable transport by providing reliable, accessible, and adequate charging infrastructure for e-mobility in Africa. E-Safiri has recently secured funding for several charging projects working in collaboration with NGOs, universities and commercial partners and is growing its team and developing its products.

Position Summary

The Mechanical Technician is responsible for the installation, inspection, operation and maintenance of the Company's mechanical assets supporting Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS), commercial ice-making, renewable energy and related operations. The role ensures that mechanical equipment remains safe, functional and reliable through timely execution of preventive and corrective maintenance activities. Working under the guidance of the Mechanical Engineer, the Mechanical Technician supports equipment installations, repairs, inspections, breakdown response and routine maintenance while maintaining accurate maintenance records and complying with the Company's safety and quality standards. The position requires frequent travel to operational hubs and project sites across Kenya and involves predominantly field-based work.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

1. Mechanical Maintenance

  • Perform preventive, corrective and breakdown maintenance on mechanical equipment in accordance with approved maintenance schedules and procedures.
  • Inspect mechanical equipment to identify defects, abnormal wear and potential failures, and report findings to the Mechanical Engineer.
  • Repair or replace defective mechanical components to restore equipment to safe and reliable operating condition.
  • Maintain tools, equipment and work areas in a clean, organized and serviceable condition.

2. Commercial Refrigeration and Ice-Making Equipment

  • Operate, inspect and maintain commercial ice-making and refrigeration equipment to ensure reliable production and efficient performance.
  • Assist in diagnosing faults and carrying out repairs on refrigeration and cooling systems under the guidance of the Mechanical Engineer.
  • Monitor equipment operation and report abnormal conditions affecting performance, safety or product quality.
  • Support routine cleaning and servicing of refrigeration equipment to maintain efficiency and hygiene standards.

3. EV Mechanical Infrastructure and Utility Systems

  • Maintain battery swapping equipment, battery handling systems, mechanical fixtures and supporting infrastructure.
  • Carry out maintenance of water supply systems, plumbing installations, pumps, drainage systems, industrial fans and workshop equipment.
  • Assist in the maintenance and inspection of electric motorcycles, including mechanical assemblies and related components.
  • Perform routine inspections of hub structures and mechanical installations, reporting defects requiring engineering attention.

4. Installation and Workshop Support

  • Assist in installation, relocation and commissioning of mechanical equipment and infrastructure.
  • Perform fabrication, assembly and workshop activities required during maintenance and project implementation.
  • Support contractors and engineers during installation, repair and commissioning activities.
  • Ensure all assigned work is completed according to approved procedures, technical specifications and safety requirements.

5. Documentation and Safety

  • Record maintenance activities, inspections, repairs and parts replaced using approved maintenance records and reporting systems.
  • Report equipment faults, maintenance requirements and safety concerns promptly to the Mechanical Engineer.
  • Comply with occupational health, safety and environmental requirements while using appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Maintain good housekeeping in workshops, maintenance areas and operational hubs.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Mechanical Engineer.

6. Financial Responsibility

  • Ensure proper use and care of Company tools, equipment and maintenance materials.
  • Minimize wastage of spare parts and consumables during maintenance activities.
  • Support stock control by reporting spare parts usage and replenishment requirements.
  • Safeguard Company mechanical assets through proper operation and maintenance.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Craft Certificate in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning, Plant Mechanics, Automotive or a related technical field from a recognized institution.
  • Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or a related field will be an added advantage.
  • Trade Test Grade I/II/III or equivalent certification will be an added advantage.
  • Valid Kenyan Driving License will be an added advantage.
  • At least one (1) year of practical experience in mechanical maintenance, industrial operations, refrigeration, manufacturing or related environments.
  • Experience working with commercial refrigeration systems, workshop equipment or utility systems will be an added advantage.
  • Experience in electric mobility or renewable energy operations is desirable.
